New Jack Swing

December 12, 2007 By: dancemas Category: Hip Hop, Historical

Remember New Jack Swing? New Jack Swing is a type of music which was popular from the late-1980s into the mid-1990s, which fuses hip-hop with rhythms, samples and production techniques with the urban contemporary sound of R&B. Bobby Brown’s “Every Little Step” is one of the biggest hit in NJS. Many dance steps were born in this era such as “Running man”, “Robo Cop”, “Roger Rabbit”, etc.. People follow moves from dancers like Big Daddy Kane’s backup dancers, Scoob Lover & Scrap Lover. I am trying to find out who these dancers in this clip are. Anyone??

Herb Alpert “North On South Street”

December 10, 2007 By: dancemas Category: Hip Hop

This is my favorite music video featuring LA street dancers.  I believe that one of the dancers in this video at 1:20 is a guy from Scheme Team from LA.  Also, you got Robert and a guy from Pharcyde (they used be dancers before rap group) in this video, too. Though Herb Alpert is not a hip hop artist.  His music has been appreciated by hip hop fans.  It is a well known fact that his song “Rise” is used as the main hook for the The Notorious B.I.G. single “Hypnotise“.  This song “North On South Street” has been one of the favorite tunes for dancers.

History of House Music

This is the best documentary about house music so far. It is long but you love house music, it is worth watching.

Grass Hopper

December 06, 2007 By: dancemas Category: House

Excellent showcase from Grass Hoppers crew (Tatsuo, Itsuji, and Hiro) I believe this is the routine they used for “Japan Dance Delight vol14″. Japan Dance Delight is the biggest street dance contest and it is the category free. The Grass Hoppers got the special prize with this performance.

1992 UK Jazz in Japan

December 02, 2007 By: dancemas Category: UK Jazz (Be-Bop/Fusion)

Even though this performance was done long time ago and UK Jazz scene in Japan was not developed yet, I still enjoy watching this performance. The video was shot by a regular crowd with Hi-8 camcorderr, it turned out to be so dramatic with lighting. And also, I love the music they danced, which is “Loud Minority” by United Future Organisation in stead of Jazz music which is normally used for jazz. I am not a jazz dancer so real jazz dancers may have different opinion but I would like to see more of UK Jazz performance done by urban club music like this song in clip. I guess I am not deep enough to appreciate the real jazz music. dancers in this video are the pioneer of UK jazz dance in Japan. They are Horie, Yuki, Goto who are later formed Sound Cream Stepperz. And Sam from TRF, a Japanese Pop music group and also long time respected dancer, and Sache. Those five dancers used to perform as a unit “MegaMix” for Japanese dance TV show.
